Christmas likely means more cooking, cleaning, and potentially even overnight guests. Before you deck the halls, think ahead about a holiday plan for your septic system and limiting water usage.
If you overload your septic system, it won’t be able to properly treat wastewater. To avoid slow drains, foul smells, and backups at the worst possible time, schedule a septic tank pumpout before your guests arrive and Santa slips down the chimney.

For overnight guests
Stagger shower times.
Make a laundry schedule. Also remember that laundry detergent may smell like “fresh breeze” or “mountain spring” but contains chemicals that are also harmful to septic systems.
Load the dishwasher and run it at night (or when no one is showering).
Put a reminder by each sink that asks guests to turn off the faucet while brushing their teeth.
If you wash dishes by hand, turn off the faucet between rinses.
For cooking
Ask guests to place potato peels, eggshells, coffee grounds, and other solid foods in the trash rather than using the garbage disposal.
Avoid pouring any grease, oil, or fats down the drain. They can clog pipes and damage your septic system over time.
For cleaning
As you make your home as pretty as a gingerbread house, remember that the overuse of antibacterial cleaning products and sanitizers can pose dangers to septic systems.
One of the most commonly used household items is sanitizing wipes. These can cause your septic system to become clogged. Please throw used wipes in the trash.
