One of our less frequently discussed services that we offer for commercial clients is grease trap cleaning. It’s important for restaurants, clubs and assisted living facilty building owners to keep the grease traps in your building as clean as possible. Your grease catches oils, greases and sludge and separates them from the water that goes down your drain. It is recommended that you schedule a grease trap cleaning at least every 90s days depending on water usage, hours of operation and size of grease traps, which all play a role in the frequency of service. The EPA requires that your trap remain functional and clean. If you’ve been putting off your cleaning, here are a few signs it’s time to schedule your grease trap cleaning:
Slow drainage
Grease traps don’t operate well when they’re at capacity. If your grease trap has developed a heavy grease cap on the top of the trap, just like a clogged pipe, it will be more difficult for water to drain through your drain system. If you’re experiencing slow drainage in your facility, odds are good that your grease trap is at capacity and needs to be cleaned.
Strong odor
Solid food waste, grease, fatty oils and sludge don’t smell very good when they’ve been sitting for an extended period of time. If it has been more than 90 days since you last grease trap cleaning and you notice a strong odor permeating your commercial kitchen that isn’t going away with cleaning, it may be time to have your grease trap cleaned.
Just like septic systems, grease traps require regular maintenance. As an owner, it’s your responsibility to maintain your grease trap and ensure that it is operating properly and removing oils, grease and other sludge from your water. This allows you to be in compliance with the EPA standards and your utility company’s pre-treatment requirements. Do your part to keep our water clean and have your grease trap serviced.
