Water Efficiency For Septic Tanks in Southwest Florida

Table of Contents

As drought conditions disappear, it’s important to keep in mind that for septic tank owners, water efficiency should be taken in account year round. Water conservation efforts inside your home reduce the amount of wastewater processed by your septic tank outside your home. This is particularly important for septic system care during the rainy season. Here are a few steps you should be taking year-round to live a more water efficient and environmentally friendly lifestyle.

  1. Laundry habits.
With busy schedules in our day to day lives, it’s easy to let laundry pile up throughout the week and have a “laundry day” on the weekends. However, laundry uses a lot of water and multiple loads in a row can be a lot for your septic system to handle at once. Try to do laundry throughout the week utilizing full loads and spreading them throughout the day. This will allow wastewater time to move through your system.
  2. Dishes.
Run your dishwasher only when it is full to reduce unnecessary waste. If you wash your dishes by hand, be sure to turn the water off and do not allow it to run constantly. Instead, fill each side of the sink – one side for wash water and one side for rinse water.
  3. Efficient Fixtures
While replacing your dishwasher and washing machine can be costly – if often saves you money on your electricity bill in addition to being much more water efficient. When possible, purchase ENERGY STAR certified appliances. Replace slow or leaky toilets with low flow models and shower heads with more water efficient brands.
  4. Check faucets and modify your routine.
Walk around your property and check your spouts and houses, as well as the faucets and pipes within your home. Spotting a leak can mean a big difference in monthly water use. Remember to take showers instead of baths and do not let the water run while brushing your teeth or washing your face.

Not only are these water efficiency reminders good for the health of your septic tank, they’re also great for the environment. As much as we take water for granted in our everyday lives – we must remember that it is a nonrenewable resource and water scarcity is an issue that will eventually affect us all. Practice these water efficiency tips on an everyday basis and protect the health of your septic tank and family for years to come.
