Drain Habits: Here’s to Healthy Septic Systems in 2021!

Table of Contents

Happy New Year! After the memories and merrymaking, it’s time for resolutions! When you think about making New Year’s resolutions related to health, think about your septic system. A healthy septic system can save you money in the long run by avoiding costly emergency repairs and keep your household running smoothly.

In the new year, make a commitment to not pouring certain cleaning products down the drain and into your septic system.

Try to avoid strong disinfectant chemicals that are commonly found in disinfecting wipes, hand sanitizers, sprays, and household cleaners. These things are often marked with the phrase, “kills 99% of germs and bacteria.”

Are common cleaners OK for your septic system?

While septic systems are designed to take in some antibacterial cleaning products, the residual effects they can have on septic systems are negative. The overuse of these products can pose dangers to septic systems because they destroy the bacteria needed in the septic system to break down waste. Without the proper amount of bacteria in your septic system, sludge and scum can build up and cause some problems.

Be sure not to pour these down your drain:

  • Antibacterial soaps
  • Drain cleaners
  • Disinfecting sprays
  • Any household cleaner labeled antibacterial or disinfecting
  • Bleach

So what can you clean your house with? Look for plant-based cleaners that are biodegradable or cleaning agents that break down naturally such as borax, vinegar, and baking soda. Always look for the “septic safe” label.

When selecting cleaning products, look at the ingredients. Keep in mind that just because something claims to be all-natural, it might not be. When in doubt, research the ingredients of the cleaners using resources such as the Safer Choice program by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The EPA provides information on products that have been tested and offers options that can better fit your lifestyle.

All of these tips become commonplace for everyone in your household, but remember that not everyone has a septic system. Putting little signs in the kitchen and bathroom are great reminders for guests!
